A very nice original known example of a cap tradition emblem of an elephant of pressed construction in copper.
This particular emblem is attributed to U-49. A boat which undertook a total of 4 career patrols before being sunk on 15 April 1940, in the Norwegian Sea north-east of Harstad.
It was attacked by depth charges from the British destroyers HMS Fearless and HMS Brazen - leaving 1 deceased and 41 survivors.
