Repurposed from a standard ammunition can, it is the applied 'E' marking which designates that this box once held spare parts for the MG. In this case, specifically, for an MG42 - given the hand applied markings and remains of the MG42 serial number, as shown.
In over a decade of specialising in collecting MG34/42 related items, this example is only one of a handful which we have encountered that are marked as such to indicate use specifically with the infamous MG42!
